Aluminum for Deoxidation in the Steel Industry

In steel production, dissolved oxygen is one of the principal enemies of final product quality. During melting in an electric arc furnace (EAF) or basic oxygen furnace (BOF), liquid steel absorbs significant amounts of oxygen that, if not properly removed, cause the formation of oxide inclusions, blowholes, and surface defects that degrade the mechanical properties of the finished steel. Aluminum is the most efficient and widely used deoxidizer in the global steel industry, and Transformación Puebla is a reliable supplier of deoxidation-grade aluminum in donut and ingot formats.

The deoxidation reaction with aluminum is thermodynamically favorable: 2Al + 3[O] = Al2O3. The resulting alumina, being less dense than liquid steel, floats toward the slag where it can be removed, leaving a cleaner steel with lower dissolved oxygen content. The efficiency of this reaction depends directly on the purity of the aluminum used and its physical format, which must facilitate rapid and homogeneous incorporation into the steel bath.

Our aluminum donuts for deoxidation are specifically designed for the steel industry. The toroidal format (donut shape, with an approximate weight of 1 kg per piece) offers significant advantages over other presentations such as shot, wire rod, or large ingots. The donut's surface-to-volume ratio allows rapid and controlled dissolution in liquid steel, minimizing loss due to atmospheric oxidation before the aluminum contacts the molten metal. Additionally, their uniform size facilitates precise dosing in the ladle or furnace, whether manually or through automated feeding systems.

We manufacture aluminum donuts in two main purity grades. The Al 95 grade (aluminum with minimum 95% purity) is the industry standard for general deoxidation in electric arc furnaces. This grade offers an excellent cost-efficiency ratio and is suitable for most carbon and low-alloy steels. For specialty steels, stainless steels, or applications requiring tighter control of the steel's composition, we offer the Al 99.5 grade (minimum 99.5% purity), which provides highly reactive aluminum with minimal levels of contaminants such as silicon, iron, and copper.

Beyond primary deoxidation, aluminum plays a fundamental role in other steelmaking processes. In secondary metallurgy (ladle furnace or LF), it is used as a chemical heating agent: the exothermic reaction of aluminum oxidation raises the bath temperature without the need for additional electric arc, which is especially useful during composition adjustment and degassing stages. Aluminum also acts as a partial denitrider and contributes to inclusion morphology control, transforming low-melting-point oxides into stable alumina that is easier to remove.

In the manufacture of aluminum-killed steels, the residual soluble aluminum content in the steel is typically controlled in the range of 0.020-0.060%. This residual aluminum acts as a grain refiner by forming aluminum nitrides (AlN) during solidification, which significantly improves the toughness and formability of the steel. For these steels, the quality and consistency of the deoxidation aluminum is particularly critical.
