AlTi5B1 (EN 575)
The most effective grain refiner: titanium + boron for synergistic nucleation with lasting effect and reduced dosage.
AlTi5B1 (also known as AlTiBoron) is the most widely used master alloy worldwide for grain refinement in aluminum. It contains 5% Ti and 1% B, forming TiB₂ particles that are the most effective known heterogeneous nucleants for aluminum solidification. Unlike pure AlTi10%, boron prevents "fading" (loss of refining effect over time) and allows lower dosages. The Ti+B mechanism produces finer and more uniform grains than Ti alone.
Chemical Composition
| Element | Symbol | Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | Al | Balance (~94 %) |
| Titanium | Ti | 4.5–5.5 % |
| Boron | B | 0.8–1.2 % |
| Iron | Fe | ≤ 0.30 % |
| Silicon | Si | ≤ 0.20 % |
| Vanadium | V | ≤ 0.10 % |
Physical Properties
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Melting point | 660–720 °C |
| Density | ~2.70 g/cm³ |
| Form | Waffle, barra cortada o alambrón |
Metallurgical Function
Synergistic Ti+B grain refinement. TiB₂ particles are thermodynamically stable and act as permanent nucleants, preventing fading. The result is a fine, equiaxed, and reproducible grain structure, heat after heat.
Dosage & Usage
Typical addition: 0.5–1.5 kg per ton of aluminum. Lower dose than AlTi10% due to synergistic Ti+B effect. Add to bath at 720–740 °C. More lasting effect: can hold up to 60 minutes without significant fading.
Applications
- Grain refinement in casting and extrusion alloys
- Continuous production with anti-fading effect
- High structural integrity alloys
Industries
Aluminum Casting
Industry-standard grain refiner with lasting effect
Extrusion
Fine grain for better extrudability and surface finish
Automotive
Safety parts requiring uniform grain and consistent properties
Special Notes
AlTi5B1 is the global industry standard for grain refinement. Also available in rod format for continuous feed systems on extrusion casting lines. Note: boron can be detrimental in electrical alloys (1xxx series for conductors) — in those cases use pure AlTi10%.
