Pure Metal — Alloying Agent

Magnesio

Pure magnesium (≥ 99.90 %) for Mg adjustment in Al-Si-Mg alloys. Essential for mechanical properties with T6 heat treatment.

≥ 99.90 % Purity
Lingote ~7.5 kg Form
Mg₂Si → T6 Function

Pure magnesium (≥ 99.90 %) is a fundamental alloying element in aluminum alloys of the Al-Si-Mg family (A356, A357). Magnesium, together with silicon, forms the hardening phase Mg₂Si that precipitates during T6 heat treatment, multiplying the alloy's mechanical properties. Without adequate magnesium, the alloy does not respond to heat treatment. Commercialized in ingots of ~7.5 kg each.

Metallurgical Function

Magnesium adjustment in Al-Si-Mg alloys. Mg forms the Mg₂Si phase that precipitates during artificial aging (T6), providing the main hardening mechanism in A356/A357 type alloys.

Dosage & Usage

Typical target in A356: 0.25–0.45% Mg. Magnesium tends to oxidize (10–30% loss), so it is added in calculated excess. Submerge the ingot with a plunger bell or perforated basket to avoid surface ignition. Do not leave Mg floating on the surface.

Applications

  • Al-Si-Mg alloys: A356, A357, A360
  • 6xxx series extrusion alloys (6061, 6063)
  • Any alloy requiring T6 heat treatment response

Industries

Automotive

Mg adjustment in A356 alloys for wheels and T6 components

Aluminum Casting

Essential element for heat-treatable high-strength alloys

Extrusion

Mg adjustment in 6061/6063 for structural profiles

Special Notes

⚠️ Magnesium is flammable. Handle with dry tongs, store in a dry, ventilated location. Never apply water to incandescent magnesium — use dry sand or class D extinguishers. Always submerge below the surface of the molten bath to avoid ignition and maximize recovery.
